Tell us a little about you, Umme.
Hello! I live in Michigan. I’m happily married for about 30 years now and a proud mother of 3 beautiful kids (two sons and a daughter). I enjoy family time and it brings me great joy to be close to my loved ones, especially my mom and my three kids. I’m a faithful person, and I like being close to God. I love to shop, sew, cook and I enjoy traveling. I value education and healthy style.
What country were you born in? Tell us a little about it.
I’m from Bangladesh which is located in South of Asia, east of India on the Bay of Bengal. It’s a beautiful country with abundant greenery, many waterways, countless vegetation and farm lands. Life in Bangladesh there was very enjoyable.
Tell us about your journey to America.
I moved to America in about 11 years ago; since then it’s been a very amazing ride, but there were few ups and downs. My first few months here was very overwhelming with searching for house, looking for job, and admitting kids to schools. Also, language difference was a problem for me until I started taking English class.
When did you start working at Better Life Bags? And what is it like?
I started working at Better Life Bags in the month of January, 2014. It’s been an incredible and learning experience working for Better Life Bags. Better Life Bags is now a part of my everyday life. When I started working for Better Life Bags under Mrs. Rebecca Smith, we were only 5 employees and I’m very delighted see Better Life Bags development over the years.
There are so many cultures represented among the employees. What have you learned from being around people of different races, religions, and cultures each day?
Better Life Bags diversity that represented among the employees makes it very unique in itself. Being around diverse group of people each day help me to grow as a person. I felt we all are the same and we all connect because of our common values, caring gestures and honesty. I never felt out of place when I go at the work place. My colleagues are very warmhearted, supportive, accommodating, and understanding. I learned to be more confident, less hesitant to ask questions and put my suggestion or ideas out.

As a company with a mission, we aim to create high quality products that make a difference in the lives of our employees. We want to bring a great product to you at a price without massive markups that other retailers attach to their product. Since we manufacture our own bags, we are able to cut out the middle man and bring you a great bag at a great price.
Many of our fabrics are made in the USA and we buy our supplies from as many small business owners as we can. But the truth is, we don't know the extent of the supply chain for all of our materials. Our goal is to have 90% of our materials be ethically sourced by the end of 2016.
Our bags are all made in the USA and we pay our seamstresses really well. They end up earning between $18-$25/hour depending on the bag and how proficient they become over time.
We have a great team of managers that help shepherd and guide our BLB family. Their salary is included in the overhead category along with all our monthly expenses like Internet, rent, utilities, machine repair, and insurance. You know, all the boring but necessary elements of running a sustainable business.
BACK INTO BLB:
This is the fun part. This is what is left over after a bag has been made. We use this to create fun advertising campaigns, offer gifts on purchases, start to develop new products, and provide interest free loans for our employees.
Your purchase matters!
